Mardi Gras Mambo

Mardi Gras/"Fat Tuesday"....February 24, 2009

For those of you that read this blog from outside of the Deep South, Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" and refers to the carnival period during the days just prior to Ash Wednesday. It is a time of partying, gorging, and feasting (on Fat Tuesday) in preparation for the season of Lent (the 40 days of spiritual reflection in anticipation of the resurrection of Jesus Christ) that begins on Ash Wednesday.

Large Mardi Gras festivities take place in cities like New Orleans, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. We took in a large parade in New Orleans, Krewe of Toath.

Buck-a-roo was all about a parade. He hollored, "Throw me somethin, Mister" for two straight hours. He remained perched atop Daddy Buck's shoulders and caught oodles of beads, stuffed animals, footballs, swords, and the coveted, spear!

Frank-o was content with the first round of beads, that when draped around his neck weighed him down to the point that he took a seat in the folding chairs and that was all she wrote. He slept through the screams of the crowds, the beat of the drums from the marching bands, and the sirens of the firetrucks signaling the end of the parade.

As we say in these parts .... Laissez les bon temps rouler/"Let the good times roll"
It all ends on Wednesday .... when I will attend Mass during the day, receive my ashes and blessing for Ash Wednesday, abstain from meat/meat products on Ash Wednesday and every Friday of Lent, and make a self-sacrifice for the entire 40 days of Lent.

I just loves me some Mardi Gras! That must have been so much fun. When I lived in Beaumont just a few minutes away from the Louisianna border I could scoot over there anytime and get some of my favorite cajun things. I miss that so much and was telling Carey about it in the store when she showed me this package of cracklins. She showed them to me because she know how much i love them. I told her those are NOT cracklins and that only real cracklin was made in Louisianna. You know the kind with the big soft piece of fat in the middle. Oh how I would love some good cracklin right now. I use to drive across the border and buy it in these big brown paper grocery bags.

Ok this comment is just making me want cracklin so I will stop.

Have a great week!

Love and Prayers,

Tim

Hi Lori me again
Oh man, I still remember those Mardo Gras when we would visit Papa Jack in Mandeville. I was EXACTLY like Harley, exceot all I wanted was this little stuffed turtle they were throwing. I got, instead, the ALL COVETED spear. And coveted is right. My big brother was GREEN with envy, so I traded him for a turtle. Not my best trade, but I was little and it made me happy. I have no earthly idea HOW Cody slept through all that. Then again, he could be like my brother. Phillip could sleep through and elephant stampede!!!
Love you all, as always, and tel Jack thanks for the birthday wishes and that I'm glad he knows who "me" is too and that that was mianly for the people I don't like that have my number anyway. haha.
